Lunenburg, Nova Scotia

Five walks around an old harbour town.

Lunenburg is a UNESCO waterfront and a working harbour — and a surprising amount of trail just past the last painted house.

Lunenburg is one of the best-preserved old towns on the continent — a hillside of painted wooden houses above a harbour that's been building ships for two and a half centuries. Most people come for the waterfront and never make it past it.

They should. Past the last row of houses there's a loop around the back harbour, a rail-trail to the next town over, colour-blazed paths in the woods, and a wild beach down the coast. These five start at the water and work outward. Tap any one to open it in Foray if you've got the app, or just read it as a map.

    easyboardwalk

Short, and entirely the point: the working waterfront itself, past the wharves and the Bluenose berth and the red Fisheries Museum. Not a hike so much as a stroll through a living harbour. Take it slow, ideally with something fried in hand.

    easyfine gravel

A loop around the quiet side of the harbour, opposite the postcard waterfront. Gravel and boardwalk with the town laid out across the water — the view of Lunenburg most photos miss. Flat, easy, and good at any tide.

The rail-trail out of Lunenburg toward Mahone Bay, following the old line along the water and through the woods. Flat gravel the whole way, with harbour views at both ends. Long enough to be a proper ride; flat enough to walk a piece and turn back.

One of a set of colour-blazed loops in the woods just south of town — the green one runs longest, through mixed forest on soft ground. Marked well enough to wander without a map. More a local secret than a landmark.

    easygrass + sand

A short grassy path down to one of the wild beaches past Kingsburg, southeast of town. Worth the short drive: white sand, big surf, and almost nobody, even in summer. The trail is nothing; the beach is everything.
