Collingwood & the Blue Mountains, Ontario

Five trails under the escarpment.

Where the Niagara Escarpment meets Georgian Bay: a rail-trail along the water, the Bruce Trail along the ridge, and the climbs in between.

Collingwood sits in a good spot — Georgian Bay on one side, the Niagara Escarpment rising on the other, and the Blue Mountains filling the gap. It's a ski town in winter and a trail town the rest of the year, and the range of walking here is wider than the size of the place suggests.

These five run from flat to steep: a rail-trail along the bay, two stretches of the Bruce Trail on the escarpment, the local leg-burner straight up the ridge, and an easy waterfront loop to finish. Tap any one to open it in Foray if you've got the app, or just read it as a map.

    easyfine gravel

The old rail line between Collingwood and Meaford, now a flat gravel path running just back from Georgian Bay. Easy, shaded in stretches, and long enough to make a real outing — ride it and you'll pass orchards, wetland, and the odd glimpse of the water.

A long section of the Bruce — Canada's oldest marked footpath — through the Beaver Valley, where the escarpment is at its most dramatic. Hardwood forest, cliff edges, and lookouts over the valley. White blazes mark the way; bring water and time.

Exactly what it sounds like: a steep, relentless climb straight up the face of Blue Mountain. Locals use it as a stairmaster with a view. Short, but it earns its name — and the top opens out over the bay. Not the one for flip-flops.

Another stretch of the Bruce, this one threading the ridge above the village. Forest and rock along the top of the escarpment, with the bay flashing through the trees. Quieter than the Beaver Valley section and easier to fit into a morning.

A short flat loop along Collingwood's waterfront park, out where the town meets the bay. Gravel paths, big sky, and the best sunset view in town — hence the name. The one on this list you can do with anyone, in any shoes.
